Alisten Portable Wireless Bluetooth 4.0 Speaker and LED Light Lamp Alarm Clock

This Alisten Bluetooth Speaker with Alarm Clock LED Lamp comes with the unit, an aux cable, a USB cable, and an instruction booklet. The speaker is attractive, has three levels of brightness for the LED or can be turned off entirely for use while sleeping.

There is an FM radio, and it can play from Bluetooth devices and also as an MP3 player with USB and micro TF/SD Card input. Personally, I use it a lot out on my porch while I am working on my laptop. I use it in conjunction with Spotify or iTunes or even my microSD card full of my favorite songs. I have sometimes also had occasion to sleep while it is on. I love that it can be set to turn itself off so I can fall asleep to music and yet have darkness and silence after I have fallen asleep.

It is true the instructions are not the clearest, but the features are not that terribly hard to figure out. I enjoy this little speaker and its portability. I move it from room to room when I change places I am working.

ONTA® Gorsun Foldable, Adjustable Lightweight Headphones (Orange)

These ONTA® Gorsun Foldable, Adjustable Lightweight Headphones are surprisingly good for the price and for being touted as children’s headphones. The headphones fit me comfortably. I consider I have a medium-sized adult head size. The fit was perfect for me, oddly enough– not too tight, nor too loose. I had no issues with them even after wearing them a long time. My daughter uses them while playing a PS4 game. She has said that after MANY hours they become a bit uncomfortable. These are not the only headphones available to her, either, so she chooses them, nevertheless. I am thinking they are suitable for about age nine and up, depending on head size.

I checked out the ONTA® pair for sound. Quite honestly I did not expect much. Instead, I was pretty impressed. The sound is crisp and full, unlike many headphones costing more than these.

Now the vibrant orange color and the plastic build and feel clues you in that these are for children. Happily, the sound does not. Unlike some similar products I have tested, these headphones fulfill their purpose well. Some things sold for children are low quality. Why? I imagine that children are not the consumers buying them and that manufacturers do not think the buying adults will truly test them out.

I would have no qualms giving these headphones to any young person.

Mrs. Saint and the Defectives: A Novel – By Julie Lawson Timmer

~ GENERAL TAKE [MILD SPOILERS] ~

I read Mrs. Saint and the Defectives in July when it was available as one of the selections for Amazon Prime’s Kindle First program. Every month, Amazon Prime members can pick out one title from the handful offered and download it for free thirty days before it debuts publicly. It is one of my particular favorite perks of the Prime program.

I chose this title, as it seemed one right up my alley. It sounded fun, light, and quirky enough to de-stress me and set me up for a positive month. I was not wrong.

The titular character, Mrs. Saint, is a powerhouse of a woman with firm opinions on things like being neighborly, families eating together, and teenage boys and dogs. You know– controversial stuff. I could not help but love her immediately. But then, I loved every one of the characters in this book. The author, Julie Lawson Timmer, does a fantastic job of breathing life into them all. Besides mere life, she bestows each with a charm, grace, and personality. I know people such as these.

Markie, a recent divorcée, and her teenage son Jesse become next door neighbors to the irascible elderly woman and a rag-tag bunch she calls “defectives.” The dance that ensues between the overstepping neighbor and the reticent, retreating Markie is something to behold.

The so-called “defectives” are an awkward bunch of lovely people like ourselves and probably everyone we know. No one escapes pain and woundedness in this life. Some merely hide it better than others, if you ask me. Brokenness does not mean one is “defective”– just human in an imperfect world.

The author has an impressive command of language and narrative. I read the book through nearly in one sitting. Ms. Timmer obviously knows people. With a few deft sentences, she made me feel I understood even the lesser characters well. I had a stake in them and their growth and struggles.

If she were to write a sequel, I would buy it and read it with anticipation. The ending was a mixed bag to me. Ultimately, I like what occurred for most of the characters. There was a development, a revelation, that I felt was not necessary to the story, but others may well disagree.

~ MORE PERSONAL TAKE – [MEDIUM SPOILERS] ~

Mainly, I enjoyed at least the first 90% of the book very much. I smiled often and even laughed aloud. Other times, I found myself “coaching” the characters as though they would hear me and fall into line. [Why do I do that– ever?]

Knowing her neighbor had lots of wisdom, why did Markie not keep her stubborn attitude in check? Why did Mrs. Saint deliver her “advice” in the same matter-of-fact way? Did she not realize that “people do not care how much you know unless they know how much you care.” Had she not heard that you “catch more flies with honey than with vinegar” sometime in her life?

So, I would have preferred if a few certain characters might have been less reactive and stubborn. It became a bit frustrating– though true-to-life to some degree– as we can “miss” each other even with the best of intentions.

I have read many lighthearted books lately in which the last chapters took on a vastly more profound and somber subject or tone. There was some warning [of a sort] when I looked back over the stories in detail. However, they felt disjointed and out of step with the rest of the narrative.

Much to my chagrin, Mrs. Saint and the Defectives wound up this way. My thought on the semi-surprise “Cause” ending is that the book, though seemingly lighthearted in tone, is quite serious in its way. The plight of these people is enough– more than enough to my way of thinking– to give it importance, relevance and whatever other weighty “ance” word you can imagine. This tale is about the human condition.

There is no end of books written about the subject that is broached in the last pages about a certain character’s back story. I would not discourage significant themes. I find them when others may not, in fact. This tale of a pushy but well-meaning neighbor with a houseful of eccentrics under her roof and their dealings with the near agoraphobic single mom and her angsty son is ENOUGH.

The ending seems a reach in a few ways. The explanation feels like a betrayal of the personality and traits of the title character. It does not go with what came before. Also, it seems like a reach — like that of an overachiever holding a pen, who always pushes for more and is rarely satisfied– and never believes that others without that ultra-critical eye, simply marvel at the beauty that was inherent in their words already.

I wish I could have assured the author that just as these quirky, beautiful people she lovingly detailed in these pages have intrinsic worth and are not “defective,” so too would this book be worthy enough without the ultra-serious turn. If it is not broken, it does not need fixing.

What Julie Lawson Timmer has done with her work has touched me greatly, without a doubt, and I am grateful for it. I just would have liked to have maintained the same particular sentiment and tone from the start through to the story’s conclusion. As this is art, though, it is the beholder’s eye that matters. Your perspective may differ.

Senlleo Precision Optical Wired Mouse

This Senlleo Precision Optical Wired Mouse has a strong braided nylon cord, reinforced on the ends for extra strength. It is the sort that will not get hung up or tangled. It has a simple USB plug, and it is in fact, plug and play. That said, there are options you can configure in your general mouse settings, but there are still more if you go to http://www.senlleo.com and download the driver.

Now I am not a gamer, but my daughter is, so she loves this mouse. After all, there are six programmable buttons, four-color options, and many LED light patterns she can choose. As I said, the mouse is entirely customizable so that it can help her gameplay. Fortunately, programming it is straightforward. We can change it to our desired setting when we get to use the laptop. We both use Windows systems.

As for me, I set the mouse to control my music. I adore music, and this mouse now lets me work through, yet quickly and easily pause/ stop, play the previous or next track of my music in Spotify. This shortcut is saving me time and effort. When I am working, I do not “miss a beat.” Pun intended.

CRONA iPhone Cables

My daughter and I have used this set of Crona iPhone Cables for a few weeks now. We each have an iPhone 5S and have used these cords exclusively to charge them. In this time, we have gotten no error/ incompatibility messages, nor had any trouble with them.

There four cords are coming in handy around the house and in the car. The 6’ cord is being used on the living room sofa so we can charge at either end with no problem. We use the 3’ cables at both a chair and a love seat. The one’ cord I have at our desk. I have synced my phone there, and I charge my phone there overnight. Then it is powered for the next day.

One thing I particularly enjoy about these chargers is that they do not fray or tangle due to the durable nylon and the aluminum shell.

These cables are durable and should last even up to six times longer than others. Especially indicating a long life ahead is the reinforcement at the stress points. The texture of the cables was a bit off-putting at first, but I am getting used to it.

These Crona iPhone Cables have an 18-month warranty that offers either a full refund or replacement.

APEKX B1 Bluetooth Earbuds – Immersive Sound— Even From Lower Volumes

These Apekx  B1 Bluetooth Earbuds have sets of S/M/L butterfly ear hooks so that they fit nearly everyone. They are comfortable in my ears and stay put as well or better than others I have owned.

On a charge, you get over five hours of time to talk or listen. If you run them completely down, they charge quickly enough. It takes just around sixty minutes. The standby time is supposed to be 180 hours; which is incredible to me.

The most important factor is the sound quality. I mainly listen to music, but occasional podcasts and videos, too. The sound is full, with good bass and clarity. It is an immersive experience. Ambient noise gets filtered well. My daughter and I tested them together. When she wore them at a normal volume for her, I could not hear the song she was playing. The same was true when I had them on. Also, we could not make out what the other person said when we had music going. That said, of course, these are not the earphones to wear if you need to be aware of your surroundings.

These are the pair I wear when I can just lose myself in the music for a while– whether I am working at my desk, performing other tasks around the house, dancing, or relaxing. Music has always been the saving grace in my life. I take it seriously.

Apekx might just get that the soundtracks of our lives mean a great deal to us.

I suggest gifting this pair to someone who has a penchant for turning the volume too high because they want to hear everything and get an immersive experience from their media. They might just turn it down and save their hearing possibly.

These Apekx Bluetooth Headphones come with both a 30-day money back guarantee and a one-year warranty.

USB-C CARD READER

This ICZI USB 3.0 Type C Adapter Connector makes transferring files, photos, or videos between a micro SD or SD card and your Type-C laptop or smartphone easy and quick. The connector is smaller than most flash drives I own.

No drivers are needed, as this is a plug and play adapter. Use this device for Micro-SD, SDHC/ SDXC, and TF. Data transfer is fast. You can use this 3.0 device even with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1, as it is backward compatible.

You can use this adapter with the following computers: Chromebook Pixel, Mac OS V9.0 and higher, Win 98/ 2000/ XP/ Vista, and 7. This adapter is compatible with the new Samsung Galaxy S8/S8 Plus as well as any other smartphone that is USB-C OTG.

I prefer using this adapter over connecting by a cord. It is simple. Photos are no hassle anymore where I used to dread the chore and let too many accumulate before removing them.

The ICZI USB-C Card Reader has a 30-day return policy and a one-year warranty, so there is no risk.

Hong Bo Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds

These Hong Bo H901 Wireless Bluetooth Headphones come with three sets (S/M/L) of ear hooks and earbud tips, a micro USB charging cable, and a user manual. This H901 is a seriously quality pair. The sound is excellent and full. It is balanced. Nice! The bass is not going to blast you across the room, but it is perfect for me. The headphones have a variety of ear pieces so that you are guaranteed a great fit. I can wear these for quite a stretch without discomfort.

Pairing with the latest 4.1 technology is simple. I just press the button on the leftmost earbud after turning on my device’s Bluetooth. The voice tells you the power is on and then that there is a connection made. It could not be easier. I use these with my Kindle Fire 8, and I love it! This Bluetooth solution is so much better than putting a tablet in one’s pocket.

These headphones stay put in my ears no matter what I do, including working out. If you get a call, these will allow you to pick it up or reject it, talk, and then hang up. The talk time on a charge is 10-hours! When finished with the call, your music starts back where you were with no issue.

The battery is long-lasting on these Hong Bo earphones. The battery has never quit on me when I have needed it, as there is an 8-hour listening time. There is a 250-hour standby time. I do not need to charge them often, either. That is convenient. These are so good that I am buying another set for my daughter.

Heiyo Stylus Fine Point Pen for Capacitive Touch Screen Devices – Silver

This Heiyo Stylus Fine Point Rechargeable Pen works well on my daughter’s Fire & and my Fire 8. The pen is the exact size of a new lead pencil. This writing device is only slightly heavier than the regular pencil. It is surprisingly lightweight for the look of it. It is comfortable to hold and has a balanced feel to it.

The pen comes in a box with a charging adapter and a diagram of the parts along with the shortest user manual I have ever seen. A short manual is enough here, as there is nothing too problematic about the pen operation. To start the pen, you press the start button at the top of the unit. A blue light flashes three times across the LED strip to show that it is on. After that activation, no other sign indicates whether the pen is on. Thankfully the pen will shut itself off after two-three minutes, so its charge is not worn down. You never have to worry about turning it off with this power-saving feature built-in.

The pen is compatible with iPads, iPhones, iPods, Kindles, Samsung Galaxy phones, tablets and touchscreen laptops; essentially anything that has a capacitive touch screen. I have noticed no lag when using this on my Kindle. I use it for routine tapping here and there, for simple games, and for writing lists, and feel it is responsive enough overall. There was a slight learning curve for me, as nearly all of my writing is on a computer or electronic device. Seeing my handwriting at first was a bit of a fright, but the longer I use it, the better it looks again.

The stylus tip has not scratched or in any way harmed my devices, which is always a concern as they are costly to replace. I am hoping my daughter will try some art with this pen and test it out with one of her apps. Although a thin fiber fine tip [2.2mm], I use extra-fine generally. When I am making lists or writing in a word processing program or app, I adjust the chosen tip to the finest one available so that I am happier with the control over the lines and with the finished product. I wish that replacing tips was possible with the Heiyo, but it is not at this time.

To charge the stylus, just remove the end cap to reveal the Micro USB underneath. Fit the adapter over the Micro USB and plug into a charging port. The LED indicator will glow with a reddish hue. It is simple and practically fool-proof to use and keep charged for the next time.

The Heiyo Stylus comes with an 18-month warranty and customer service should you ever need it.

LESVIEO 600Mbps USB Adapter

The Lesvieo 600Mbps USB WI-FI Adapter adds wi-fi capability to a device that does not already have it, extends wi-fi, or replaces a non-working connection. The package includes the adapter that you screw together, the CD with the driver/ manual, and the printed manual booklet.

The dual channel aspect is important as it supports both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz. As most devices operate on 2.4 GHz, the band is saturated with traffic. Being able to access 5.8 GHz will result in a better connection and faster downloads. It is like traveling the high-occupancy travel lane or priority lane on a highway in the data sense.

You do need the capability of 802.11AC, which is the latest wi-fi technology to get the most of the adapter as far as range and speed. Lesser equipment will mean you can use this adapter still, but the performance will be commensurate with the capacity change.

My use of this dongle has been to extend the range of my wi-fi in my house and outside the house, where I sometimes like to work to get some fresh air and the sun. It is “plug and play” with Windows 10, which is what I use. I screw the two pieces together (it has a multi-angle rotation) and attach it to my laptop. That is it. Now my connection is good outdoors when it was spotty at best beforehand.

The wi-fi adapter has an 18-month warranty, so there is no risk. It also comes with lifetime technical support.
